Your kiddos are bringing home a permission slip for our Aztec Ruins field trip today. PLEASE send the signed slip back ASAP! Thank you. (Thanks for posing for our website Braylon!)
September 29th we are taking our first field trip to Aztec Ruins. We've been discussing the world around us and how we fit into our city, state, country, etc. It's important for students to know some of the cultural heritage of our region. Stay tuned for more information and the permission slip going home in your child's take home folder. If you'd like to join us, I'll let you know about transportation- whether you need to meet us there or if we have room on the bus/van. Durango Nature Center (near the turn to go to Ignacio) is expecting a bunch of crazy 2nd graders on October 17th. We will explore animal adaptations and have a picnic too. Prior to our field trip, a representative from the Nature Center will come to our classroom to teach a lesson preparing us for our visit. Again, more info to come via your child's take home folder. I asked my kiddos, "What is your favorite part of you?" We took pictures of what they are most proud of and then had to write about it. If you'd like a closer look, check out the 2nd grade hallway!
2nd graders should have addition facts +0 - +10 mastered, but we are doing a quick check before moving onto subtraction. I tested students Friday and realized my littles need a bit of a kick start from summer vacation! Refer to the green data sheet in your child's take home folder to see their progress. I tested +0-+4 and will continue testing this week, we ran out of time. As children pass their addition facts, they will move onto subtraction facts. A super quick "count on" is allowed if needed (for example: 9+5; say the larger number aloud and count on to 14). Strategies to help your child learn their facts: flash cards, apps which quiz facts, write and rewrite addition problems, addition puzzles or use Uno or playing cards to randomly select numbers to add. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
We are off and running! This has been a busy first week. I'm anxious for next week so we can get into our routine and start guided reading groups. Some of you may be wondering why Saxon Phonics seems to be sooo basic right now. Please understand it will pick up pace, as the beginning lessons are review. Having strategies in place to attack unknown words helps students be better, more fluent readers. We tested sight words today. You'll see the results listed on your child's green data paper in their take home folder. Please leave the data paper in the folder so I can update regularly and keep you informed. Loving the inquisitive nature of my students. We've had lots of great discussions during our days at PHA! I am ready for our school year to begin! I've had an amazing summer traveling, relaxing by the pool and enjoying my family and friends. I am anxious to see all my kiddos and get this year off to a great start. Our classroom is very close to complete- it is a beautiful, HUGE, room with lots of space to move and learn. God has definitely blessed PHA🙏🏼!
Student's first day of school is Monday, August 15th. We are asking parents to stay from 8:00-8:30 on the 15th to meet with your child's teacher and learn about classroom procedures to make 2016-17 the best yet! Please check our class website often for blog posts and updated information. Enjoy your last few days with your kiddos and see you soon! 💗Mrs. Payne |
